Redefining Tradition: The First-Ever Vegan Barrister’s Wig

At Ivy & Normanton, we’ve always believed that legal tradition and progress can co-exist. While our roots lie in making court wear that reflects the diversity of women at the Bar, we’re equally committed to championing innovation, especially when it aligns with values of inclusion, ethics, and sustainability.

That’s why we’re proud to be one of the first stockists of the Hemp & Hemp wig; the world’s first vegan-friendly barrister’s wig.

This historic alternative was created by Samuel March, a barrister and passionate animal rights advocate, who questioned a 200-year-old tradition. Since 1822, traditional wigs worn in English and Welsh criminal courts have been made using horsehair. For Sam (and many others entering the profession) that no longer felt compatible with modern ethical standards.

As a vegan, Sam was clear in his stance: “I refuse to sponsor exploitation by buying expensive items made from animal products as this adds value to the practice of owning them and selling them for parts.” He decided to take matters into his own hands (literally!) and design a sustainable, cruelty-free alternative from scratch.

The result is a beautifully made-to-order barrister’s wig crafted from soft, natural hemp on a lightweight nylon frame. Each wig is slightly unique, thanks to the natural variation in the fibres, a reminder that tradition doesn’t have to mean uniformity, and progress doesn’t require abandoning symbolism.

We’re delighted to now offer these game-changing wigs as part of our collection.
